CINNOBER is a delightful independent book and design shop in the heart of Copenhagen. I love coming here; it is cozyness and coolness all in one breath, and the selection of design-, graphic- and illustration books is immense. As is their range of reprints, japanese tape, notebooks, stamps, cards, pencils and other office yums.

Here I can browse and flip. Sniff and dream. And be inspired.
I buy most of my books here.

Went to see photographer Andreas Gursky at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art last week. I'm in awe of his work; photographs, highly manipulated, so subtle.

His often huge photos seem, by first impression documentary; like snapshots of a situation, a landscape or an everyday scene, but on closer look, the images dissolve—what I am looking at can't be true, the perspectives messes with my understanding of space, I can see something has been altered, but can't tell exactly what, and it leaves me questioning everything in the image (»If this isn't what I thought it was—what I was sure of was true!—what else isn't?«

In one grip, he challenged my visual perception, embraced my aesthetic (some of his works are beautiful beyond words), commented on society and made me laugh.

In awe indeed!

Louisiana writes: »With their visual mastery, the works of the German photographer Andreas Gursky insist on the vast, fascinating power of the image and stand as a modern proposal for what beauty may be. Andreas Gursky’s photographs are the answer of art to ‘extreme sports’. On YouTube, this is a film on the making of one of his works: Hamm, Bergwerk Ost (I think it is the bathing facilities by a mine. The film is in German, but you get a view into his process nonetheless. The last bit in particular, when seeing him working on the computer).

Knitted with Wilfert's »Amalfi«; a blend of 80% merino and 20% angora, these long arm warmers are sooo soft and warm and cozy. Very easy made with 5 needles, 1 skein per arm, and a little pattern—not too difficult—made it the perfect tv-project! I have been watching Downtown Abbey. Alas, will Mary and Matthew ever get one another?

I hope you had a wonderful holiday, a warm and cozy Christmas and a festive New Year!
I have enjoyed every minute of this past week, and today I spent some time looking back, remembering the year that passed, looking forward to the year to come.

2011 held a sad goodbye for me, to a grand soul whose company, wisdom, lightness and deep I miss profoundly.
The year also held hellos; to new friends, a new place of work and sweet colleagues.

The David Collection

The other day my friend and I visited The David Collection here in Copenhagen. Like so many other cities around the world, Copenhagen holds many museums, and I find myself puzzled as of why there are still so many of them I haven't yet visited. The David Collection was one of such unvisited. Now no more.

And what a treat this museum is. Holding three permanent collections, The Islamic is the most visited, and also the one we saw. Absolutely stunning; the art, the surroundings and the atmosphere was wonderful, inspiring, educational ... and a mind broadening experience. And the staff was really really sweet.

Okay. 'nough with the words :-)

The reason our choise fell on The David Collection this Wednesday was their Special exhibition on Sufism. My friend is quite versed in this area, and I, having recently bought a collection of Rumi poems, was eager to learn more.

Being only one room, the exhibition was quite small, but as oposed to the huge permanent one we had strolled through, reading infoboards sporadically, we absorbed every word and every nuance of this one room. The stories and the art made a great impression on me.

This board reads a prayer and a poem from 1658:
If you seek the jewel in a mine, then you yourself are the jewel; if you live for the soul in the body, then you yourself are the soul – know that when the day is over, you are what you are seeking.

I was fortunate to be asked to illustrate an article in the beautiful foodie mag: Copenhagen Food :-) This one is about Christmas foods in other countries.

Yesterday I was recommended to find Smilerynker's (»Crowsfeet's«) blog. Via a lady who'd been inspired by Smilerynker to make this in a corner of her appartment: A little elf-door in the wall. Isn't this the sweetest idea? I think my kids may be too old for Elves sneaking in and out of the walls now. But I'm not :-) Maybe I should start looking for doors ...

Today we celebrated first advent Sunday, and lighted the first candle in this year's advent wreath. Last year I made three—one out of paper, one of fabric, and a miniture one using christmas tree candles and egg cups. This year's advent »wreath« is not really a wreath, more of a foresty bump with lots of birdies on it :-) We've had many an argument wether or not it was a crying shame to light these innocent lil' creatures.

No animals were harmed during this shot.

Feeling awfully Christmassy, I also started a long planned (or long dreamed, rather) foodie project: I'm making a traditional English Christmas cake. I have high hopes for this puppy (which, I might add, is of considerate weight and sturdiness).
The creature has soaked in booze, been sifted, stirred, whisked, spiced, baked and boozed some more. And it aint over yet! Now it shall sit for three weeks, to be regurlarly drizzled with ... more booze. Then decorated. Then (hopefully) enjoyed.

I have never even had Christmas cake before. And have no idea what I have gotten myself into.
Am I in for a treat?

Soul Food

This weekend is Copenhagen Book Fair-weekend. I went yesterday, and in spite of the fact that Friday is a normal workday, the place was packed. Yes, of books ;o) and of book-lovers too. Ain't it great?!
Judging by the amount of visiters, it seems the book is still a beloved media.

It's always fun and inspiring to look at covers, and the foodie in me was drooling all over all the fabulous cook books. Especially Marie Melchior's Når livet er en fest (When Life Is A Celebration) and Anette Eckmann's Naturens spisekammer (Nature's Larder).

(The picture right above here is from the little publishing house Batzer & Co. Now, I cannot say I have read all of their books, but a few, and the ones I have, have all been of the mindblowing, life-altering kind, and are without exception among the best books I have ever read. I am actually quite awestruck by this! Some record in my book ;-)

On my way to work yesterday. Autumn has been so mild, and the mornings dim and silent.

Wauw! Feel as if I've been in a regular time warp. Where did those past two-and-a-half weeks go??? Work have been ca-raiizy, which made my brain shut down for brief moments :-))) Last week grocery shopping I used the self-service register like I've done so many times before, and I actually placed two cartons of milk in my shopping bag without scanning them first! ...
Me: »Miss! Theres something wrong with the screen—the machine won't let me continue«
Helpful-lady-at-register: »You have to scan your groceries before putting them in your bag. Otherwise it's stealing«
Me: »Oh«
Man! Did I feel stupid. I actually bursted into a lame explanation of how I'd had a really busy day, but she'd already turned to help someone else. I alternately laughed and shook my head all the way home.

But alas! Now Weekend has put its warm, soft arms around me, and though I still have to work a little, I also want to blog! And knit! (got mi'self a brand new book, and yarn in new colors for Coffee-Owls-to-come to share with you later).

Daily presents

Whenever I can, I walk to where I work. The walk takes me through my beloved old city, and there are numerous routes to follow. I try to walk different ones each time. Each one holds a small present.

Yesterday took me through Christiansborg, into the garden, and through the collonades. The noise of the city are kept out by these light sandy gray walls, and made room for a different sound; of horses. Turning my head, a door was open, and I snug into The Royal Stables. What a treat.

I so wasn't supposed to be here, but when a staff passed me (and my obvious phonecamera), he silently ignored me and went on with his day, so I snug out again, to go on with mine.

Sunday spent in the Kitchen

One of the great benefits of having an office is that I seldomly work on the weekends anymore (as opposed to every weekend before). This has freed what feels to be a massive amount of time—time for some of the »homy« stuff I love so much.

Today I spent the entire day in the kitchen. I made a batch of pickles made from my late grandmother's recipe. (You can find a couple of pictures, and the recipe here if you like: at Clemmensen & Brok)

I made a cake and a terrine from the giant zucchini. Wheat and rye buns with nigella seeds, sausage rolls, basil pesto, and for dinner; spicy chicken wings with root ragout and creamy polenta. (might have gone a little bit overboard—admittedly I was kindda beat once we'd finished dinner :-)

The beginning of tea cozy from Saturday. Much too tired to knit now. Perhaps tomorrow.

The photo doesn't show, but the zucchini is massive! As long as my arm from elbow to fingertips. I shall make zucchini cake, and a zucchini terrine with eggs and cheese. They had so many they gave them away for free at my local farmers market: Din Baghave (Your Backyard). Here they sell only locally grown—often organic—veggies, fruit, eggs, flour etc. all year 'round. Such a lovely store.

Tina made a post about the store a while ago at our foodie blog Clemmensen&Brok.

New issue of Marie Claire Idees arrived today. It is the best. And I have always liked the fall issues the best. This one didn't disappoint! I'm autumnly inspired now! :-)

Little Me is now a real doll. Her characteristic yellow rain coat and black tulle skirt are currently at the tailor's (and those guys are very busy at the moment – making graphic design instead of doll's clothes, but please don't tell her ;o)

She's posing on some new books I got for the studio: Letterpress and Los Logos. And her hair—not the official Coraline hair-cut, but Little Me likes wearing it long. For now.

On Weather Faves and Shawarmas By The Waterfront

Being an "all-weather" kinda person, I'm usually equally mooded come rain or come shine, but today was so mild, and instead of going home after work tonight, we grabbed a shawarma and bicycled to the waterfront. Must admit the experience had me in favour of Summer for a couple of hours there.

...and since we dined right next to this littl' ol' lady, I couldn't help myself ...

(I've only ever photographed her once before. During a Copenhagen Photo Marathon, in which I was disqualified because the roll of film in my camera stuck, and left me with only 23 of the mandatory 24 photos (one for each hour of the day). I don't mourn the disqualification, as I didn't then -- my 23 shots weren't that great, but I sure had fun.)

An Arm And A Leg ...

Vacation time is over, and work is abundant. Which means more hours spent at the office, less wearing cross word puzzles and pj's. I'm not complaining. I read the other day, that Danish people are among the most vacating in the World. You shall hear only gratefulness from me.

Still working on Coraline's Little Me, her head is done, admittedly needing a haircut though, and this is how far I am with her body.

Soft and Stretchy Friday

I'm not that good with a sewing machine, but I have one – my mom's old faithful – and what I don't have in skills, I will usually muster in patience (as long as I stick to pretty simple projects).

I spent the entire day today measuring, cutting, pinning and sewing to make this pair of soft and stretchy kids' pants. It's been a year, I think, since I made something serious like this, and I'd forgotten how wonderful it is to get lost in this process.

Before I knew it, this (above) emmerged from little balls of left-over yarn. Will I go for the Insanity Blanket? Alas—no. I shall settle for the smaller, less insane pillow case version instead. I have not the yarn stash nor the endurance for that insanely huuuge (but oh-so-gorgeous) blankie.

Yesterday I realized that my new office lacked supplies! Today, I have new pencils, a highly educational pencil sharpener, overliner, correction tape and Post-Its!

Made a book cover for a poetry book (a blues-poem, roughly translated: Tell Me An Underground Tree, Pronounced By The Wind) by Danish poet Marianne Larsen.
A couple of years ago, I made the cover for her previous poetry collection Særskilte stillinger, (Separate Positions), and this new cover had to have the same sort of style or feel.

Water for Copenhageners

We had the most amazing thunder storm here yesterday. For hours, thunder rolled and for a while it roared right above our heads. And lots of water fell.

This morning many were busy emptying their basements of water, and overseeing the damages it had made. In our building the damages were minimal. We were lucky.

I sent out the give-away packages this weekend. One to USA, one to Australia and one to Canada. Had to add a tax mark describing the content, and asked the post office lady if the recipiants risked paying tax then?? She didn't know. Oh I hope not. That would be odd - receiving a gift, but having to pay for it.

I have moved my work place to a shared office in another part of town. I am closer to the city now, and right next to the canals of Christianshavn, in a really great neighbourhood. It's so nice to have colleages (or sort-of-colleagues—each of us being selfemployed), and they are all so kind and sweet and funny.

Winds of Change

These past few days, Rain, Thunder and Lightning've been puttting on a grand show in the skies above Copenhagen. Monday was warm, and ended in a hot-tempered roar.
Feels like a deep sigh after holding ones breath.

All day the news announced the "cloudburst"'s coming, so when I felt the wind change, I sat on my balcony to enjoy the show. First the air turned blue, purple, the birds sounded different, and the breeze came, and smelled oceany. Then sturdy clouds rolled in over us, and changed the world for a little while

This photo of mine really doesn't do this justice, but I couldn't help myself. When lightning came, my trigger-reflexes were way too slow :-)

A weekend of enjoyment

This weekend has been full of relaxation and enjoyment. So wonderful, that I almost forgot to take pictures.
But I do have two ...

the begginning of my new succulent adventure :-),

and the beginning of a new knitting project. I've been in love with Kathleen Kelly's light-as-air cardi since I first saw it (see the You've Got Mail clip here), and finally started to make it. Since I have no recipe, I shall make it my own, with slight alterations (ie have tiny silver beads on the front, and no buttons. I think).

There hasn't been much blogging. Alas. Not time for everything.

Oh yes, another thing I've been doing, is a bit of internet-shopping. For the longest time, I have had Keri Smith's Nonplanner Datebook on my wish list, and last week I found a European website which carried it, and I ordered it right away. Can't wait to flip throught its pages!

Usually, I happilly accept the fact that I have 24 h a day. It's a lot, when you think about it, and planning will get one far. But today I'm not standing quite so strong.

So. I think I'd like an extension. Please.

I haven't decided if it should be an extended day, week or even month. Just know that there are all these faboulous things I want to make, and do and see and read and listen to, and I can't seem to find enough time forrit all!
You could argue that I should choose, but you wouldn't, if you knew just how wonderful stuff we're talkin' about here.

Yesterday evening, we went for a walk through the city, and these silent ships sailed across the sky. What a beautiful way to end the mini-holiday this easter has been.

Days have been warm, evenings light, and the Magnolia is in full bloom. All of it in delicious soothing silence.

I hope your easter has been just as you wished (or even better).

According to tradition, before Easter we make »Gækkebreve« (Easter letters), writing an Easter poem and finnishing the letter with a little riddle for our names. If the receiver quess who it's from before Easter, you owe him an Easter egg, if he doesn't, he will owe you one.
This year I owe two Easter eggs :-D

If you want to make gækkebreve like these ones, you shall fold a square piece of tissue paper four times, and cut it like this: I made the small holes using a puncher

Thank you for your views and thoughts on how to make more time for creativeness. It was very inspiring to read. I haven't yet figured out how to bend it, but I believe it calls for some re-arranging. Somehow.

On another arty note, a friend & I went to Arken (Danish modern art museum) Friday, and saw Olafur Eliassons light installation Your Blind Passenger; a 90 meter long foggy tunnel, with changing light. An amazing experience.

You can read more about the exhibition and see a little film of the making of the tunnel+interview with the artist here, if you like.

I took these pictures (above) inside the tunnel. Of course they do the installation no justice, but perhaps gives an idea.
Pretty cool.

Book inspiration

Two new books arrived; Save 7the Date (a book on calendar design) and 1000 Artist Journal Pages. Both gorgeous and hugely inspiring.

I am warming up to do some more journal pages. I miss the ol' Dear Diary days, and I've been thinking how to make time to get started again with something similar. My (work)life was pretty different back then—I had a 9 to 3 job, which gave me plenty of time to do other stuff in the afternoons and on weekends. Now, running my own business, I work way more hours, and differently; with less structure, and weekends often included.

So more structure would be one way to give myself time to art journal. Say, I stopped working Friday at noon, and journalled. Hmm, I wonder if that would work ...

How do you make time on a regular basis to make stuff?

(love all these different expressions. So personal. Yum)

What a weekend! No. First things first -- been sick all last week. It was bad, but it was good. I regularly need to remind myself that too much work is (way) too much, and that I should respect time to relax and un-work. Used to think this was a decision I had to make once, and go with it -- turns out I need to make this decision regularly.
My body helped me this time, by making me unable to work. And this is good. Felt bad, but sick does that I s'pose, and I'm fine now, so
:-)))
Anyway. Didn't work this weekend, which brings me back to the beginning; WHAT a weekend! Sooo much sun, and chirping birds and more sun. Absolutely wonderful. Dare I ask...? Does this mean end of winter for now?? Man, I hope so

DAY window display

I made the inks :-) Christine Rudolph designed the whole window display; her idea was to create the windows with 2D models with a twist, and she asked me if I wanted to draw faces, arms and legs. (would I ever!).

This weekend I finished a little skirt and sleeveless pullover for my Sister-in-law's beautiful daughter. I went there (to bring it) and because I'd been invited to our monthly handy-crafty day.
Except--we don't really meet every month, but more ... randomly. And sometimes we don't handycraft s'much, but chat instead. But it's great fun, often counting lots of sweet yarnies, and it has a name; Primo Jovis (First Thursday) since, initially we met every first Thursday of the month. But yesterday was Sunday. So.
Quess it's not the strickt rules of it that keep us going ... ;-) Must be something else ...
I hope your Sunday was soft as well. And that your Monday is gentle

Sad Passing Of A Wonderful Soul

I’ve been a little quiet for a few weeks now, and for a sad sad reason.
My dear friend, creative colleague, and co-author of Scraps, Elsebeth, passed away last Monday. Her passing came after 6 months agressive illness. I miss her dearly, and send my love to her family and her many many friends in this very difficult time.
Above a little tribute. Thing she made, things (of many) I made inspired by her, and things we made together. A tiny bit of all that we shared.
But beyond this, we shared the things you cannot take pictures of. Things of the Soul and of the Heart. These things I will keep with me forever.
I miss you; sweet, wise, wonderful Friend.

On my way to a meeting Friday morning, the city was once again covered in a thick damp blanket, and I took a couple of pictures of downtown towers reaching for the sky. Originally I just wanted to post them as they were, but then this little collage, with a reject ink from last week, almost made itself.
I find myself in love with this coral color lately. Want to color the whole world coral :)

Awesome documentary on Annie Leibovitz: parts 1 2 3 4 5 6 —the whole thing lasts an hour. And left this little blogger speechless with admiration!

Mine is. I have slow food cooking in the oven, and have made rosewater-lemon-filling for the macarons I will go make in a couple of minutes. A cuppa Joe is within my reach, and I have just enjoyed a slice of oat-wheat bread, fresh from the oven. Ahh-yes, a soothing Sunday indeed.

On top of a busy busy week. A week in which I received this wonderful gift from sweet Aimee, and didn't have the minutes to share it! Busybusybusy. In the good way, fortunately, and not the can't-feel-my-toes-way. Don't like that kind of busy!

Time Traveling

Went to a great flee market yesterday. The building that held it is an old shipyard building, with so much atmosphere—even without the fog! But as an extra treat, it was wrapped in thick, grey fog. There were hardly anyone there, and standing next to the old walls, holding my breath in the damp morning, I could almost hear the singing of steel, and the yellin' of workers.

A couple of hours later, I went home, my head buzzing with history, carrying a small nightstand I'd bought at a ridiculously low price :-)

Today we went to town for a little shopping trip, and among other places, we went to the old Copenhagen bon bon factory Sømods Bolcher. Situated in a backyard, behind the facades of the city, this little old shop and factory, where you can watch the candy makers make the bon bons, is a little view into ancient Copenhagen. Stayin' in the crafty department to make more Coffee Owls. Have a wonderful Coffee Owl-opportunity comin up, but can't say more until March ;o)

I've been so eager to share these newly purchased glass eyes. It's been quite the pursuit, I have seen many many many glass eyes, and there they were—just the right ones (and in great many sizes and colors), and my heart jumped with joy. Not to mention when they arrived, purchased glass eyes being even prettier in real life.

Hope you had a wonderful xmas. With lots of love, gatherings, foods and togetherness.
The picture below is a little look-back – 2010 in twelve photos; one from each month. I had forgotten most of them, or in my mind placed them in different months. The year is long, but time's short. Better enjoy it :-)
Making this recollection had me thinking of the things that happened this year, and soon I found myself looking curiously at the possibilities for the year to come. I've never been much of a resolution-maker, but I love dreaming up those fluttering images of what could lay ahead. Fluttering and out of focus, 'cause we don't know. Anything really, of what may come ...

Which brings me here; to welcome you, 2011, with what you may bring. I'll do my best to refrain from judging good or bad, but try to simply greet each day with an open mind.

It's been snowing here again (the trees look so pretty) and looking down in the Copenhagen Metro yesterday – so did the floor there! What a wonderful little piece of art we made, with our snowy boots and dirt from the streets.

That's me. Inbetween myself today. I woke up today thinking I didn't even know me. I was grumpy, moody, downright unpleasant to be around. Where did that come from? I ask of you. You don't have to answer. I'll just sit this one out...

It's aftenoon now, and fortunately I feel the grumpiness fade a little, but let me for the moment share a list Grumpy Grumpysson made this morning:

· Making any kind of decision
· Going to business meeting with new client
· Writing emails
· Answer telephone
· Thinking about any of the following: xmas presents, deadlines, excercise.

Thank you for your kind comments :-) I wanted to take some pictures of the xmas card crocheted today, but man! the light is there, and bam! it's not. Days are so short this time of year. And I neeed the light to take pictures.

Ah well. Midst the few hours of light – and the beauuutiful sunshine we had, I went for a walk, but forgot the camera :-) I borrowed my sweet friend's phone (thanks, V), and took three pictures (or was it four?). Anyway, as I remembered, one of them was this:

It was a gorgeous walk.
